I have to laugh...I just came home from meeting up with the others involved here at 1 in Four (where we had a great time dreaming and planning) and to my delight saw that my neighbours had put out a couch and chair with a big "get free!" sign prominently displayed.  I parked my car, walked casually over, lifted up the cushions, had a peek underneath and then ( after  a quick glance around my neighbourhood)... hauled those babies inside in record time!   Bedbugs aside (oh oh just thought of that), an excellent find. My life sure has changed.  It's amazing what happens to you when you lose your belongings, your home....starting over is actually not that bad, in fact I have found there to be something really freeing about not having to "keep up with the Joneses"  -  not that I ever really felt that pressure but where I used to live, lugging someone else's cast-off furniture into your own living room would definitely have raised a few eyebrows. Score!

This is a quick blog...I really just want to comment on how the thought of leaving all of my possessions, my home and my security (as I saw it) actually was a factor in my not leaving an abusive marriage.  I felt trapped by my surroundings; financially there was no way that I could conceive of starting out on my own.  How could I afford to? I didn't know how I could afford to buy furniture let alone be able to save up enough for first and last month's rent....it was just too overwhelming...and so I stayed.

You might feel that way too.  So I want to encourage you to get all the information that you can... find out about services that you are eligible for and agencies that can help.  If there is to be any point in the sharing of my experiences on this website, then it is for others to learn from them. There is help. Please do not let the fear of starting over prevent you from finding out your options.   I never knew there were so many services to help my children and I, until I started looking.  And just so you know...there are lots of ways to get furniture without having to take it from your neighbour's lawn....I just can't resist a great score.  Check our Resources tab to find services and agencies in Hamilton who can help and please don't hesitate to call one of the crisis lines listed on our main page....they are staffed by people who have the answers to your questions.
